Storm Claudia Impact: Clean-up Operations Persist as Arctic Blast Approaches

Emergency crews are continuing their efforts to manage widespread inundation caused by the passing severe weather.

A major incident was announced in the town of Monmouth, southeastern Wales, where residents were rescued or evacuated from flooded homes after torrential rain on the weekend.

On Sunday morning, multiple major alerts, indicating a danger to life, remained active, alongside dozens of alerts across England. River levels on the Monnow surpassed all-time highs, surpassing levels seen during past storms.

Homes, commercial properties, transport networks, and power grids all suffered from significant flooding in Welsh regions, authorities confirmed.

Reports indicated that approximately twenty properties in England experienced flooding due to the severe conditions, including some in Cumbria.

As Storm Claudia moves away, a sharp temperature drop is expected to move across the United Kingdom, bringing sub-zero conditions and potential wintry precipitation.

Saturday night, the UK experienced its coldest night since spring, with temperatures dropping to -7C in Tulloch Bridge, Scotland.

A decline of around 5C will change unseasonably warm November readings to lower figures nationwide, with Sunday's high at about 11C in the southeastern region before becoming colder at the week's beginning.

"While Storm Claudia moves south, atmospheric pressure to the north-west will bring a chilly Arctic air across the country," a weather expert stated. "This results in significantly chillier weather than lately, and, though mostly dry, there is also a potential of wintry hazards. Frost across many areas are anticipated, with temperatures falling as low as -7C in some places next week, and daily maximums staying in the single digits."

He added, "Combine this with a brisk northerly wind, and there will be a significant wind chill. This marks a significant shift after a prolonged spell of unseasonable warmth."

Health authorities have activated a warning for low temperatures for several English regions from Monday, while flood management bodies have cautioned that flood risks may continue throughout the weekend.

The low-temperature warning is in place from Monday morning until Friday morning, covering the eastern Midlands, West Midlands, North East, northwest, and Yorkshire region.
