National Officers Launch Immigration Operation in the City of Charlotte
Homeland Security personnel have descended on Charlotte as part of President Donald Trump's intensifying operation on undocumented immigration, according to official statements.
The initiative, called "The Charlotte Initiative", was disclosed on the weekend, with representatives stating that "criminal illegal aliens" would be the focus in the city.
"Federal authorities are sending Homeland Security personnel to the city to protect American citizens and eliminate security risks," an official representative announced.
Local officials, including the city's chief executive, released a unified declaration criticising the operation, saying it was causing "unnecessary fear and uncertainty" in the local population.
Tactical Approach
Armoured vehicles and special operations teams could be participating in the local operation, according to official records.
Several church members working on grounds at a eastern Charlotte church fled into woods when authorities descended, with an individual being apprehended, according to accounts.
"We believed the church was secure and we would be undisturbed," a young bystander stated to media.
Political Context
Since the presidential term renewal, government agencies have been sent to various urban centers including major metropolitan areas to implement the promise of "the biggest immigration enforcement effort" in American history.
The federal agency said they are conducting the campaign because North Carolina has not complied with the approximately 1,400 immigration agency individuals in custody, meaning they had been discharged due to "sanctuary policies".
City Status
Charlotte is not a sanctuary city - urban areas that have regulations in place to limit the assistance given to government enforcement - but it is a "officially recognized inclusive community". This is a formal designation for municipalities that are focused on immigrant integration.
"Federal officials will act to safeguard the public when municipal leaders decline," authorities announced.
Community Profile
This urban area is an culturally varied municipality, with about 17% of inhabitants being immigrants, according to population statistics.
DHS has not disclosed how long the raids will continue. The Chicago operation, which started last fall is still ongoing.
Leadership Commentary
In recent days, Congresswoman Alma Adams said she was informed of the initiative and was "seriously troubled" about Border Patrol and ICE agents coming to the state.
The subsequent location on Trump's list is set to be New Orleans, according to sources, and that as many as two hundred officers could be deployed to the location.
Campaigns in previous cities like large metropolitan areas have come under fire over worries about disproportionate measures.
Support Options
Representatives said there are "various agencies available to support persons needing legal advice on immigration concerns".
- Legal assistance organizations are available to support those impacted
- Area assistance programs can provide advice on legal protections
- Government procedures exist for expressing worries about operations
