{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences near miss with Formula 1 safety personnel
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a potentially deadly collision during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two safety personnel ran across the track right in his path
The dangerous situation happened on the third circuit when marshals were observed on the racing surface as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to swap his damaged front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Immediately after, the team's competitor Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you just see that? I could have... killed them"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I approached Turn One and there were just two individuals dashing across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was extremely hazardous"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Evidently there's been a miscommunication at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a ongoing race track safety personnel can be permitted to just dash across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some sort of explanation, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is actively examining the events
"After an occurrence at turn one, the race directors was informed that wreckage remained on the track at the apex of that corner" stated the regulatory authority
"During the third lap, safety personnel were informed and placed on standby to enter the track and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had made a pit stop, the orders to send marshals were rescinded and a double yellow flag was shown in that zone"
"Our inquiry continues what happened after that point"
