Ex- FBI director James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to giving untrue testimony to US legislators and impeding a lawmaking procedure.

The former director's legal representative filed the answer on his behalf in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

Patrick Fitzgerald declared he would seek to have the legal matter dismissed for various factors including that his the accused, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.

James Comey was charged just days after Trump pressured his top legal official to take action against him.

Court Developments

In court on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer Patrick Fitzgerald advised the judge they intended to present multiple petitions to dismiss the proceedings before a court case, claiming the government's case was vindictive and that a federal prosecutor was wrongfully designated to take over the case.

The former director's legal matter was originally managed by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under scrutiny from the former president after his examination into an additional rival - NY AG Letitia James - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Legal Setting

Mr Comey appeared in good spirits as he came into the courtroom on mid-week, speaking with his attorneys and sharing humor. He was joined by his partner, Patrice Failor and child his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration recently fired.

After listening to the judge recite his rights and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on mid-week, James Comey was questioned if he grasped the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he informed the judge.

Previous Events

James Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from four years and was fired about a few months into the former president's first term as commander-in-chief. At the period, the director was overseeing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between Russia and the presidential campaign.

During his tenure, the director caused a backlash from liberal politicians when he stated just days before the 2016 presidential election that he was probing presidential nominee Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Charges against Hillary Clinton were never brought, leading to disapproval from conservative politicians as well.

Present Charges

Government attorneys assert the former director provided false information to US lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in 2020 when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They claim he misled the Senate by saying he had not permitted someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to journalistic entities details about the government examinations.

Prosecutors also charge the defendant of "wrongfully trying to influence, obstruct and slow" the panel by making false statements to it.

Personal Comments

Via social media James Comey shared to his online platform after he was indicted, he stated he was not guilty and alleged the former president of acting like a "tyrant".

"Our household have understood for years that there are consequences to opposing Mr Trump," he stated. "We will not live on our bended knee."
"I'm innocent," he continued. "So let's have a court case."

These allegations against James Comey emerged after Trump shared on social media demanding his attorney general, Ms Bondi, take legal action against James Comey and other people.
