European Union naval forces have safely freed 24 sailors from a Malta-registered oil tanker that was targeted by sea robbers off the shoreline of Somali waters.

The vessel, which was carrying fuel from India to South Africa, was seized on the recent incident when armed pirates opened fire with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades before taking control of the vessel.

The crew locked themselves inside a secure safe room while the pirates took control of the ship.

Successful Rescue Operation

A naval vessel, functioning under the European Union's maritime security operation, arrived at the ship on the following day. Elite military units boarded the vessel and found all 24 crew members unharmed.

"All personnel is secure and no injuries have been reported. Throughout the ordeal, they stayed in the citadel in constant communication with command center," authorities stated, noting that a "demonstration of power" had convinced the attackers to abandon the ship before the warship reached the location.

Ongoing Threat

Authorities added that the threat risk in the area "continues to be serious" as the pirates are continue to be in the vicinity.

The mission involved a aircraft, drone and surveillance aircraft. Just hours earlier, another ship in the identical region was approached by a fast boat but successfully avoided it.

Resurgence of Piracy

This event represents the most recent in a spate of incidents that have raised alarms about a renewal of piracy in the area.

Such activity had decreased when international naval patrols and security measures were introduced after peaking more than a ten years past.

Nevertheless, attacks by militant groups on vessels in the Red Sea, which have been conducted for the recent period, have caused ships to be diverted through the African coastline - opening up new possibilities for local pirate groups.

Statistical Overview

  • Multiple piracy cases of maritime crime took place off the coast of Somalia last year
  • Several vessel takeovers were documented among these events
  • A single case of piracy was reported in 2023

Industry professionals are closely watching the situation as shipping companies navigate these increasingly dangerous shipping lanes.
