Donald Trump Touches Down in UK for Unprecedented Repeat State Visit Amid Demonstrations Assemble in Windsor
The US president arrived in the UK ahead of what marks his repeat state visit, an occasion labeled as historic in modern political relations.
Trump and his wife Melania touched down on Tuesday evening at London Stansted aboard Air Force One. Their itinerary features events over the coming 48 hours, such as meetings with the monarch, military parades, and a possible flypast by the Red Arrows alongside British and American F-35 fighter aircraft.
Protests Erupt In Opposition to Trump’s Agenda and Rhetoric
The visit has triggered criticism from various quarters in the UK, with the anti-Trump alliance holding a protest in Windsor on Tuesday and scheduling another rally in central London on Wednesday.
One prominent figure accused the US president of fanning the flames of polarizing, far-right politics across the globe in the past few years.
The critic stated that Trump’s deployment of the military in US cities and targeting of marginalized groups echoed tactics straight out of the authoritarian’s handbook.
The official emphasized that while maintaining good relations with the US is practical, the UK must be willing to criticize a leader who advances divisive policies.
Ceremonial Welcome and Protest Scenes
Upon arrival, Donald and Melania Trump were welcomed by US protocol officials and a British lord-in-waiting representing the monarch. Yvette Cooper was among those in attendance to greet the president.
The Trumps then entered Marine One, their official aircraft, which departed shortly after their arrival. They were expected to proceed to Winfield House in Regent’s Park.
Meanwhile, around 70 demonstrators assembled outside Windsor Castle, carrying signs and shouting phrases such as “Trump out” and “Donald Trump not welcome here”.
One participant commented, “It is necessary to show that we do not support what is happening in the world at present.”
A different attendee expressed frustration at the UK leadership’s decision to extend such a lavish welcome, describing it as “disgusting” and questioning whether Trump deserved such unprecedented treatment.
Ceremonial Activities and Armed Forces Participation
King Charles and Camilla are scheduled to welcome the presidential pair with a formal reception at Windsor Castle, featuring gun salutes discharged simultaneously in Windsor and at the Tower of London.
UK defense authorities confirmed that this would be the largest guard of honour provided during a state visit, with approximately 1,300 armed forces members and 120 horses taking part.
The occasion will also include a carriage procession to the castle, accompanied by the household cavalry, and a Beating Retreat ceremony—a debut such an act has been performed for a state visit.
A lavish state banquet includes performances by several ensembles, such as the Duchess of Edinburgh’s String Orchestra and pipers from the a historic regiment.
Mixed Public Reaction and Upcoming Plans
While many protested, some expressed approval for the US president’s visit. One supporter stated that his presence could assist in brokering global stability and strengthening international alliances.
Another local admitted that while not protesting, they felt the protests represented the views of the majority in the UK, stating that the state visit seemed designed to appease Trump rather than represent public sentiment.
The president is set to visit the country residence of the UK prime minister on Thursday, with military aviators positioned along the route upon his arrival.
