China's Figure Skaters Under Probe Following Displaying Prop Weapon during Competition
ISU officials have launched an investigation after two Chinese ice dancers appeared with an object resembling a replica weapon during a grand prix figure skating event.
Broadcast footage captured the skaters sitting alongside a large toy shaped like a missile labeled “DF-61” as they awaited their scores at the “kiss and cry” area during the event.
The DF-61 is a new Chinese-made land-based intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear weapons, which was unveiled at a military parade last month.
“The ISU is aware of an unsuitable soft toy appears to have been among those tossed onto the ice by spectators following a routine during the competition,” the organization stated via a release.
“The soft toy was then handled by the athletes after their performance. The ISU apologizes for the incident and will investigate further.”
Ren and Xing finished in eighth place of 10 pairs during the ice dancing competition, which was won by the American pair from the US.
